Balkh Economic Debate Held on Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Economic Relations
The Balkh Economic Debate was organized by the Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Organization (AELSO) in collaboration with Mawlana University in Balkh Province. The event brought together university leaders, faculty members, students, researchers, economic experts, and individuals interested in economic development and regional cooperation.
The debate was held as part of AELSO’s efforts to promote constructive dialogue, critical thinking, and evidence-based discussions on key economic issues affecting Afghanistan. The central theme of the debate was:
“The Role of Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Economic Relations in Afghanistan’s Economic Growth and Development.”
The program commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by opening remarks highlighting the importance of academic dialogue and informed debate in addressing economic challenges and opportunities. Speakers emphasized the role of universities and research institutions in strengthening regional cooperation and contributing to Afghanistan’s long-term economic development.
The debate featured two distinguished economic specialists who presented different perspectives on the opportunities, challenges, and future prospects of economic relations between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. Discussions focused on regional trade, transit and transportation networks, energy cooperation, investment opportunities, employment generation, and the broader implications of cross-border economic integration for Afghanistan’s development.
Participants explored how strengthened economic ties with neighboring countries can contribute to expanding trade volumes, improving market access, attracting investment, and supporting economic stability. At the same time, the debate highlighted the importance of domestic reforms, infrastructure development, and institutional capacity-building to ensure that Afghanistan can fully benefit from regional economic partnerships.
Dr. Wasiq, One of the debaters emphasized: “Economic cooperation between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan should be viewed not merely as a trade relationship, but as a strategic partnership that can create new opportunities for investment, connectivity, and sustainable economic growth across the region.”
The second debater, Mr. Wahedi noted: “Regional economic integration can accelerate Afghanistan’s development; however, its success depends on strengthening domestic production, improving competitiveness, and creating an environment that encourages private sector growth.”
An interactive question-and-answer session enabled participants to engage directly with the debaters, raise critical questions, and share their own perspectives on regional economic cooperation. The session generated productive discussions and demonstrated a strong interest among young people in understanding the economic dynamics shaping Afghanistan’s future.
Following the debate, participants were introduced to a practical reference book related to the topic of regional economic cooperation and development. The event also included a comprehensive evaluation and summary of the key arguments and findings presented during the debate.
To recognize academic contributions and encourage continued intellectual engagement, certificates of appreciation and books were awarded to the debaters. Additional books were presented to the leadership and faculty members of Mawlana University as a gesture of academic partnership and cooperation. Certificates of participation were distributed to attendees, and the program concluded with a networking session and group photo.
The organizers emphasized that creating platforms for informed economic dialogue can play a vital role in strengthening economic literacy, encouraging evidence-based policymaking, and enhancing youth engagement in discussions related to Afghanistan’s economic future. They further highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and constructive academic debate in supporting sustainable development, prosperity, and economic resilience in Afghanistan.
