Kabul Economic Debate at Khatam Al-Nabieen University
The Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Organization (AELSO), in partnership with Khatam Al-Nabieen University, organized the Kabul Economic Debate, which focused on the return of Afghan migrants. The event brought together experts, professors, students, and young people to discuss the legal and economic sides of this issue in detail.
Speakers at the event discussed the return of migrants to Afghanistan and stated that it can be both a good opportunity and a serious problem. They pointed out many challenges, such as social unrest, rising unemployment, capital flight from the economy, lower wages, lack of legal frameworks, issues in identity verification, property disputes, and cultural differences. Experts at the Kabul Economic Debate emphasized that Afghanistan’s economic systems, legal framework, and overall situation are not adequately prepared to handle the return of migrants. They warned that without proper support and favorable conditions, this repatriation could spark social crises and create a range of range of additional challenges for society.
However, the experts emphasized that with the right and appropriate legal and economic frameworks, the return of migrants could become a major opportunity. They recommended developing a national plan for migrant return, safeguarding migrants’ rights, ensuring their security, and creating the conditions needed for their successful integration into society. They also identified key actions that need to be taken: improve infrastructure, protect civil rights, create job opportunities, resolve property disputes, establish an international support team, and strengthen national coordination to assist returnees.
Audience members also took part by asking questions and sharing their thoughts, which helped deepen the discussion. It was agreed that migration affects not just the people moving but also both their home and host countries in legal and economic ways. The debate stressed the need for careful planning, using migrants’ skills to help the country grow, and ensuring their human rights are respected. It also called for stopping forced deportations.
Overall, the Kabul Economic Debate gave a clear and full picture of the return of migrants, showing it can be both a challenge and a chance. It also offered useful ideas on how to turn problems into opportunities. AELSO thanked Khatam Al-Nabieen University for its support in hosting the event and promised to keep encouraging open and meaningful conversations like this in the future.
