Identifying Challenges and Opportunities for Supporting Afghanistan’s Private Sector

The Kabul Economics Forum, initiated by the Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Organization (AELSO) in collaboration with Khatam Al Nabieen University, brought together approximately 200 participants, including youth, university officials, media representatives, professors, chamber of commerce & investment delegates, researchers, experts and aimed to address the economic challenges and opportunities in Afghanistan and support the country’s private sector.

The forum began with the speech of Hanif Farzan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Organization (AELSO) and continued with the speech of other notable speakers namely; Dr. Abdul Qaium Sajjadi, Chancellor of Khatam Al Nabieen University; Abdul Salam Kohi, Legal Advisor to the Chamber of Commerce and Investment of Afghanistan; Zabihullah Sadat, CEO of the Tolo News Agency; Mohammadi Khan Yaqoubi, Head of Public Relations at Afghan Wireless Communication Company; Professor Sayed Barat Ali Naqvi, Head of Business Management department at Khatam Al Nabieen University; Mohammad Shabir Bashiri, University Professor and Economic Expert; and Abdul Qaher Beheshti, General Programs Director of the Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Organization (AELSO).

In the first part of the forum, speakers and program experts discussed the challenges and opportunities in higher education, trade and investment, technology and telecommunications, agricultural economics, and methods of entrepreneurial human resource development by universities which presented realistic solutions to capitalize on opportunities and support Afghanistan’s private sector.

In the second part of the forum, the participants of the Kabul Economics Forum divided into four groups, facilitated by mentors and experts, to share & exchange ideas and discuss different topics such as; tourism, mechanized agriculture, entrepreneurship opportunities in banking, information technology and telecommunications, and the impact of robotics and artificial intelligence on future professions in Afghanistan.

Dr. Mohammad Jan Rahmani, Head of Trade Economics department at Khatam Al Nabieen University, summarized the Kabul Economics Forum and added: “The Kabul Economics Forum brought hope to youth and participants. In this forum, we understood and recognized the challenges and gaps between university education and industrial areas. With the kind help & cooperation of think tanks like AELSO, we can promote the growth of knowledge and ideas align with the country’s job market which can lead industrial and economic development in Afghanistan.”
